Gov't offers new rules for rear visibility in cars
The government is proposing new rules aimed at “improving rear visibility standards for cars.” (K. Thomas, AP Washington, 12/3). These new regulations may make rear view cameras more common in future vehicles to address concerns about children being inadvertently struck by drivers backing up.
Most carmakers plan to meet the new requirements by installing rear view video cameras with corresponding in-vehicle displays. The regulations may be phased in as early as the 2013-14 model years.
The government estimates “nearly 300 people are killed and 18,000 injured each year because of backovers. Nearly half the deaths involve children under age 5.” As a car and truck accident attorney in Chicago, I fully support the new government regulations. Safety, especially when it involves children, is paramount.
